College of Education associate professor pens op-ed on children and play in Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Sean Durham, an associate professor in the College of Education, has co-published an op-ed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that points to the potential positive outcomes of schools and programs for young children being shuttered because of the coronavirus. Children, he writes, now have the time and freedom to follow their own instincts and interests. With a research expertise in the importance of play, Durham argues that this is a time for children’s natural creativity to shine through.

“Let’s support children’s natural ways of learning rather than suppress them,” Durham said. “A renewed commitment to children’s self-directed pursuits will allow their creativity, ingenuity, confidence and useful knowledge to flourish.”
