A team of Auburn University civil engineering graduate students and researchers are gaining real-world, hands-on experience that will benefit a community south of Huntsville, Alabama, after a landslide closed a section of U.S. Route 231 on top of Brindlee Mountain.

The team is led by Jack Montgomery, assistant professor of civil engineering, as they attempt to map the layers of rock below the road’s surface and identify what is causing the road to crack. The team will deliver the results to the Alabama Department of Transportation, or ALDOT.

The team conducted testing on Feb. 17 and will return on Feb. 21 to perform additional tests. The road will remain closed until ALDOT can design a repair for the slide.
