Israel named Outstanding Advising Administrator

Charles Israel, associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Liberal Arts, is the recipient of Auburn University’s Outstanding Advising Administrator Award. This competitive award recognizes Israel’s significant impact and support of student advising on campus. 

“Dr. Israel is an asset to the college and to Auburn University," said College of Liberal Arts Dean Joseph Aistrup. "As an effective leader in our college and a well-respected university colleague, Dr. Israel is very deserving of this recognition."

In his role as associate dean for academic affairs, Israel is responsible for curriculum planning and development, enrollment management, student learning assessment and academic advising.

“Dr. Israel has not only been instrumental within the College of Liberal Arts, he has made significant contributions to advising across our campus,” said Melissa Adams, director of student services in the College of Liberal Arts. “A true champion for advising, Dr. Israel is a humble and collaborative leader who consistently demonstrates an understanding and appreciation for advising.”

Other adjectives in Israel’s nomination letters describe him as proficient, organized, approachable, friendly, an effective communicator and supportive.

“Dr. Israel is a leader that is appreciated by all who work with him,” Adams said. “His ability to see all perspectives in situations and approach solutions in a positive way make him invaluable to the advising community in the college and the university. The advisors and I are all so thankful for the leadership Charles provides. He is most deserving of this award.”

Israel was formally recognized during an awards luncheon on Feb. 19. 

“I benefitted from great advisors when I was a student and now I am continually blown away by the quality of the work done by our academic advisors; by their care for students, and by their continuing efforts to improve on what we’re doing to promote student success," said Israel. "I may be getting an award here, but it would certainly not be possible without the tireless efforts of our outstanding advising professionals."

Israel joined the Auburn faculty in 2005 and became an associate dean in 2013. He is an associate professor of history and served as chair of the Department of History from 2008-2013. Prior to Auburn, he was a faculty member at Texas A&M University and at Sewanee: The University of the South. A native Tennessean, Israel received his bachelor’s degree in history from Sewanee and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Rice University. Israel is an accomplished teacher and researcher in the history and religion of the southern United States.
