In order to better control traffic on West Samford Avenue during peak travel times, a traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Mell Street and Samford Avenue beginning March 9 during spring break.

Following installation, the signal will flash red for two weeks on all approaches to give drivers time to become familiar with the added signal. The intersection will continue to function as a four-way stop during that time. The signal is planned to be fully operational on March 20.

Currently Samford Avenue carries more than 6,000 vehicles per day with Mell Street carrying 3,000 per day. Samford Avenue’s traffic is currently being controlled by the four-way stop, which has caused heavy delays along the roadway.

“The new traffic signal at Mell Street and Samford Avenue will reduce vehicle delays that are currently experienced during peak times along Samford Avenue,” said Ben Burmester, university transportation and site engineer. “It will also help in eliminating confusion on who has right-of-way for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.”

In addition, the new signal will be timed in coordination with the City of Auburn’s signal at the intersection of College Street and Gay Street to allow for better traffic flow between the two intersections.
