Megan-Brette Hamilton, assistant professor from the Department of Communication Disorders, is featured on the cover of the January/February issue of The ASHA Leader. Her article, “An Informed Lens on African American English,” re-conceptualizes the approach to African American English so the misidentification of speech-language disorders can be avoided, and students can be steered towards services that truly benefit them while sustaining cultural-linguistic identity. ASHA, or the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, is the national professional, scientific and credentialing association for over 200,000 members.

Hamilton’s research centers on the classroom and clinical experiences of African American English-speaking children and speakers of other non-mainstream dialects. She is curious about the role of dialect and cultural identity in acquiring Mainstream American English literacy, paralinguistic aspects of dialect, teacher-student communication interactions. Hamilton has presented her work internationally; consulted with teachers, librarians and speech-language pathologists; and maintains a website dedicated to increasing the understanding of cultural-linguistic diversity.
