An opportunity to study in Salvador Da Bahia, Brazil, is open to all students until Feb. 16. In the course, “Researching, Reporting and Retracing the History of Slavery and Racism from Brazil to Alabama,” students will examine the history of the Transatlantic Slave Route while staying in the tropical coastline city of Salvador da Bahia.

All students will learn how to collate and contextualize historical data and policies that influence current discussions and social issues surrounding inequities in the U.S. Students will meet and interview descendants of enslaved African Americans; examine how the economic and political development of the slave trade impacted and continues to affect U.S. public discourse surrounding discrimination, immigration and “othering” based on skin color and/or social-economic status; examine how the slave trade undergirds the legacy of Jim Crow laws; and explore the relationship of “culture” to the literature, art, history, geography, customs, traditions, ways of life and values of a country.

Graduating seniors with international experience are hired 97% faster by employees. Students earn six credit hours taking the two courses listed below. This opportunity is open to all majors.
