As the campus community begins to head out of town for the holiday break, Facilities Management is busy ramping up plans to make significant progress on more than 50 projects while everyone is away.

“Our goal is always to plan each project to minimize impact on the campus community,” said Dan King, associate vice president of Facilities Management. “Working with our contractors to schedule construction while students are out of town helps us to accomplish this goal.”

The scope of each project varies from minor building repairs, to completing projects of historical significance in replacing the Ramsay Hall cupola, to starting major capital projects such as the Northeast Campus Utilities Expansion.

A 2019 holiday construction map is located on the Facilities Management website. The map outlines where each project will take place. A few of the projects with the most impact to campus will be road and parking closures, some of which will begin prior to the holiday break. The major road and parking closures are listed below:

  • Biggio Drive: Both lanes of Biggio Drive, in front of the Jane B. Moore Softball Complex, closed Dec. 9 and will remain closed through Jan. 8 as utility work takes place to prepare for construction of a player development building.

  • West Samford Avenue: Both lanes of West Samford Avenue, in front of the Facilities Management Complex, will be closed Dec. 16-24 as utility work takes place in support of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering Advanced Structural Testing Laboratory construction project.

  • West Thach Avenue: Two lanes in front of Mary Martin Hall and a portion of Ross Square will be closed beginning Dec. 16 as Phase I of the Northeast Campus Utilities Expansion project begins. Access into Ross Square from West Thach will be temporarily closed during this time. Phase I and II will take place through Feb. 14. Maps for the first two phases are located on the Facilities Management Temporary Road and Facilities Closures webpage. Maps for the final phases will be posted in early 2020. Northeast Campus Utilities Expansion construction is scheduled for completion during summer 2020. The purpose of this project is to prepare for construction of the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center.

  • Wilmore Drive: Wilmore Drive will be reduced to one lane Friday, Dec. 20 and Sunday, Dec. 22 as contractors set up and subsequently remove a large crane that will install a new cupola on top of Ramsay Hall. Both lanes of Wilmore Drive will be closed all day Saturday, Dec. 21 as contractors install the cupola.

  • North Park Parking Garage: The sixth floor parking level and associated ramp of this parking deck located next to the library will be closed Dec. 15 - Jan. 7, 2020 as contractors work to make repairs to this area of the deck.

  • Intersection of Mell Street and Samford Avenue: Expect intermittent lane closures and pedestrian detours starting Dec. 16 as foundation and electrical work begins in preparation for installation of a traffic signal in early 2020.

Maps detailing the Biggio Drive, West Samford Avenue, West Thach Avenue and Wilmore Drive closures can be found on the Facilities Management Temporary Road and Facilities Closures page.

Facilities will release additional information regarding the progress of these projects in early January 2020.
