Nutrition, Dietetics and Hospitality Management graduate student Brittannie Chester was named the first place winner of Auburn’s fall Three Minute Thesis, or 3MT, competition on Nov. 21.

Chester’s thesis, “The Efficacy of Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Interventions in the Management of Glycemic Control in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus” focused on hemoglobin A1C, or blood sugar, control.

As a dietitian, Chester was able to set up in a family care practice and test hemoglobin A1C over a three month span in 40 diabetes patients. These patients had an average of 7.1 hemoglobin A1C at the beginning and three months later, an average of 6.8 indicating good control.

Dietitians were able to help patients lower their hemoglobin A1C by providing education and helping patients have a better understanding of how to manages their diabetes through making lifestyle changes, promoting healthy weight loss and weight goals and blood sugar monitoring.
