Aviation degrees move to University College, new education facility coming to airport

A rendering shows the two-story, 23,000-square-foot Airport Aviation Education Facility that will be built at the Auburn University Regional Airport. 

The Auburn University Board of Trustees agreed at its Feb. 3 meeting to move aviation programs currently in the Harbert College of Business to the University College, allowing students more flexibility in completing aviation-related coursework.

Constance Relihan, associate provost of undergraduate studies and director of University College, said the change will essentially end the current aviation management and professional flight management degree programs in the Harbert College and restart them under the University College. Samuel Ginn College of Engineering breaks ground on $40 million student achievement center

Auburn University's Samuel Ginn College of Engineering hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, Feb. 2, to celebrate the construction of the $40 million Brown-Kopel Engineering Student Achievement Center.

Construction of the center is made possible thanks to a $30 million gift from John and Rosemary Brown, which was announced as part of an overall $57 million gift, the largest in university history, in April 2015 at the Because This is Auburn — A Campaign for Auburn University kickoff event. Site preparation for the project began December 2016 with the demolition of the Engineering Shops and L Building. Construction is anticipated to be completed by spring 2019. This project will complete more than $60 million in new construction and renovation on the engineering campus. [Read more]

New directors, officers appointed to Auburn University Foundation Board

The Auburn University Foundation recently appointed four new directors to its board: Leslee Belluchie of Great Falls, Virginia; Kerry Bradley of Auburn; Bruce Donnellan of Birmingham; and Javier Goizueta of Atlanta. The board also named Mike McLain '72 of Atlanta as its new chair and Benny LaRussa '82 of Birmingham as vice chair.

"Through their work to foster philanthropic relationships with our alumni and friends, our directors help ensure that Auburn maintains a high level of performance, effectiveness and accountability in its fundraising efforts," said Jane DiFolco Parker, vice president for development and president of the Auburn University Foundation. "Our foundation directors are important partners with the professional fundraising staff in Auburn's Office of Development." [Read more]

‘Shug’s Men’ exhibit at Auburn’s Draughon Library commemorates 60th anniversary of Auburn’s 1957 National Championship

The men that made up Auburn's 1957 national championship football team–from players to coaches–are featured in "Shug's Men," a new exhibit at the Ralph Brown Draughon Library that commemorates the 60th anniversary of Auburn's first national championship.

Among the Items on display are a signed team football, team photograph, player and coach quotes, football programs and pictures of notable players who led the team to victory. The exhibit was researched and assembled by Auburn University Special Collections and Archives Department library technician Jennifer Wiggins. [Read more]

January Spirit of Excellence winners announced

Four Auburn University employees have been recognized as Spirit of Excellence recipients for the month of January. The recipients for January are, pictured above from left, Patricia Branum of Auburn University Libraries; Taleeda Edwards of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures; Betty Terry of Custodial Services; and Katrina Ponder of the Office of Information Technology.

Spirit of Excellence is a monthly award from Human Resources given to employees in the areas of service/maintenance, secretarial/clerical, technical and administrative/professional. The award recognizes employees who perform above the requirements of their position to improve service, quality and the department’s image; exemplify professionalism and dedication to excellent service by putting forth extra effort; provide outstanding contributions of significance to the university or department’s mission; achieve accomplishments that exceed normal expectations; or have outstanding business contributions of significance. Monthly winners are eligible to receive the Employee of the Year Award, announced at the annual Employee Recognition Award ceremony in the spring. [Read more]
