"In my teaching and research, I help others to look critically at what we do as university researchers that either fosters or hinders a more fully democratic society. I have pursued these research interests as part of interdisciplinary teams of faculty and students, and to these colleagues I own an enormous debt."

Before joining the Auburn faculty in 1985, Conner Bailey worked in the Marine Policy Center at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and at the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management. His work centers on the sociology of natural resources, with a strong interest in the impact of technology on resources and the people who depend on them. In his first 10 years at Auburn, Bailey was active in the examination of environmental injustices relating to siting of solid and hazardous waste facilities in Alabama and the South. Much of his research has focused on forestry issues that involve technological and ownership changes, which he argues have contributed to a legacy of rural poverty in Alabama. Bailey also spent nine years living in Southeast Asia, including three years working on rural health in Malaysia as a Peace Corps volunteer, followed by research on upland and lowland agriculture as well as marine fisheries and coastal aquaculture. Bailey is married to Lisa Brouillette, and they have two daughters, Rebecca and Rachel.
