Business professor and doctoral candidate discuss Opportunity Zones

Professor James Barth and doctoral candidate Shen Zhang of Auburn’s Harbert College of Business recently discussed their paper, “Opportunity Zones for Economic Development and Job Creation: The ‘Nuts and Bolts’ and a Look at Alabama,” on a podcast by The Heartland Institute. They also talk about issues related to Opportunity Zones nationwide.

Pursuant to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, state and territorial governors nominated thousands of distressed areas for designation as Qualified Opportunity Zones where reinvested capital gains are eligible for tax breaks.

More than 230 developers, investors and community leaders met at Auburn University on May 1 for the first statewide conference on the federal Opportunity Zone program.
