Accelerated dual degree program approved for Auburn students

Students at Auburn University will soon have the opportunity to earn credit for a master's degree while still working toward their undergraduate diploma.

Trustees at Auburn recently approved an accelerated dual degree program that is expected to appeal to top students who wish to work in fields where advanced qualifications are needed.

Auburn Alumni Association awards more than $500,000 in student scholarships

The Auburn Alumni Association and its affiliate Auburn clubs nationwide awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships to 226 students this past year. The association contributed more than $750,000 to its scholarship endowment fund, and Auburn clubs raised more than $400,000 for scholarships at the close of the fiscal year Sept. 30.

Primary purposes for Auburn University stimulus funds to be student support and learning

Auburn University has identified programs that $25.9 million in stimulus funds from the federal government will support once released by Gov. Bob Riley.

The majority of the funds will support student learning, safety and other enhancements, as well as teaching. The intent is to enhance the experience of the entire student body, which for fiscal year 2010 has reached 24,602.

Newsmakers: Auburn partners with Ford in research project to boost highway safety

A research project by Auburn University and Ford Motor Company shows that global positioning system satellites that can "talk" to cars could help prevent serious accidents.

The researchers have found potential for a GPS satellite to act as an early warning system that detects when a vehicle is about to lose control and communicate with the vehicle's stability control systems and other safety features to prevent a rollover or other serious accident.

Financial Times ranks Auburn among world's leading Executive MBA programs

Auburn University's Executive MBA program in the College of Business is ranked 84th in the 2009 Financial Times global ranking of the world's best Executive MBA programs.

Auburn is ranked 40th among programs in the United States and is one of only two Southeastern Conference schools ranked this year. In the nine years Financial Times has ranked Executive MBA programs, this is the first year Auburn has been eligible for ranking. The University of Tennessee's program is ranked 93rd overall and 46th among programs in the United States.

Auburn University launches agriculture leadership program for high school students

Auburn University has launched MATRIX for the Future: Premier Agriscience Education Academy in response to a growing shortage of secondary and postsecondary agricultural educators and declining enrollment numbers in agriculture at Auburn and at land-grant colleges nationwide.

The two-year project, funded by a $100,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, was developed by Don Mulvaney, an Auburn University College of Agriculture professor, animal scientist and leadership coordinator for the College of Agriculture; and Brian Parr, an assistant professor in the College of Education and agriscience education specialist.

Auburn University debuts new collegiate license plate design

Auburn University has introduced a new design for its collegiate license plate that is now available in county tag offices across the state of Alabama. The new design features six characters and a large AU logo along with blue and orange gradients at the top and bottom of the tag. Proceeds from the sale of license plates in Alabama go to the Auburn University "License to Learn" Scholarship Endowment Fund, a statewide program that raises funds for freshman scholarships. Approximately $1.2 million in scholarships was awarded in 2008-09.

Auburn University launches social networking Web site

Auburn Family Auburn University became one of the first universities to have its own social networking Web site with the launch of "Auburn Family," a site designed to inform and connect current and prospective students, alumni, faculty, staff, parents and fans.

The site, which can be accessed at http://family.auburn.edu, allows users to manage their personal profile, upload Auburn-related photos, blogs and videos, set status updates and communicate with other members via their "comments wall" or direct messaging. The network also features current news stories about Auburn University from students' perspectives.

Auburn Magazine goes backstage with the band
Ever upbeat, the Auburn University Marching Band rallies Tigers fans each fall with sprightly performances on the field at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn Magazine, which mails to Auburn Alumni Association members this month, details the blood, sweat and tears behind the band's pregame and halftime shows, and chronicles the group's roots as a small drum corps with a single tenor horn to its commanding size of 380 musicians and other performers today. Alumni association honors lifetime achievers
The Auburn Alumni Association has selected four Auburn University graduates as recipients of its highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award. They are: shipping magnate Robert Kenneth Johns '57 of Summit, N.J.; insurance mogul J. Smith Lanier II '49 of Lanett; rocket scientist Gerald W. Smith '61 of Huntsville; and retired astronaut Kathryn C. Thornton '74 of Charlottesville, Va. All four will be honored at a dinner and induction ceremony March 6 at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center in Auburn. For more, see www.aualum.org/lifetime.

Golden Eagles Reunion celebrates first AU graduating class
Auburn University's first graduating class returns to the loveliest village of the plain April 22-24 for the 2010 Golden Eagles Reunion. The class of 1960, the first group of seniors to receive degrees from the then-newly-named Auburn University, will be inducted during the event. Alabama Polytechnic Institute classes of 1940, 1945, 1950 and 1955 also will be honored. Watch for more information to come at www.aualum.org/events/golden-eagles.html.

Alumni association recognizes top faculty
The Auburn Alumni Association in September honored six new Alumni Professors for teaching, research and outreach: Frank Bartol, associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Veterinary Medicine; Subhash Sinha, professor of mechanical engineering; Mark Steltenpohl, professor of geology; Wei Wang, associate professor of graphic design; Curtis Jolly '77, chair of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology; and Mary Mendonca, professor of biological sciences. Also honored were three Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award recipients: Ted Becker, professor of political science; Carolyn Robinson '96, assistant professor of horticulture; and Shari Park-Gates, assistant professor of consumer affairs. The association's Minority Achievement Award went to Nels Madsen, professor of mechanical engineering. Kimberly Walls '82, professor of music education, was named Distinguished Graduate Faculty Lecturer. For more, see www.aualum.org/awards.
